Can't believe it's only been 3 days!

Hola!

Day 3 in Spain was quite a busy one!  After making a quick breakfast for myself (Maria leaves for work before I get up, so I fixed some toast and tea for myself), I headed to campus where I met up with some of my new friends.  We bought cell phones (I finally feel like a normal person!) and signed up for “day trips” for this weekend and next.  This weekend I will go to Segovia on Saturday and Toledo on Sunday.  Next weekend, we will venture to Salamanca and El Escorial.  Should be some exciting trips!  We also signed up to visit two of the famous art museums here in Madrid: El Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza.  That will take up a good portion of Friday (my day without classes!) and then we have a tapas night following the museum tours.  Yay art and food!

After taking care of errands on campus, we strolled around the surrounding neighborhood—shopped for some school supplies and grabbed a quick snack at a convenience store (potato chips and Coco-Cola Light = great Americanized snack!).  Around 3, we left campus with the whole orientation group on coach busses for the final orientation activity—a trip to the gardens of a palace (I should know more about this place, but information was scarce), and then our merienda at a nearby restaurant.  When I heard about the merienda, I was expecting a small snack, but this was a full-blown meal!  And such good food!  Several little courses—Spanish tortilla (like an omelette), some sausages, pan (bread), and other dishes I didn’t recognize.  Once we were completely stuffed, they served us churros con chocolate… talk about rich dessert.  :)  There was definitely no way I was going to be hungry for dinner tonight.

Once I got home, I started planning some trips around Europe.  I currently have flights booked for Paris and Dublin!  Super excited about that, although it seems very surreal at this point!  Classes start tomorrow, so I’m going to bed soon to make sure I’m well rested.  Hope everyone is having a wonderful week.

Much love,
Elizabeth

  1. Elizabeth, do you remember when I served churros con chocolate to my Spanish class last year? No? Well, I did. Was el chocolate really thick? Like hot chocolate only it was pure melted chocolate? Yeah, that's el chocolate perfecto.
