Day Tripper, Pt. 2

Hola!

Today was my day trip to Toledo, a town I definitely want to revisit!  The bus left from school at 9 AM, and we arrived in Toledo around 10.  Toledo is south and a bit west of Madrid, so I was expecting it to be a little warmer there, but, as a last minute decision, I put on my big, warm, red jacket, and I am very glad I did.  When we arrived in Toledo, we couldn’t see anything because a thick layer of fog covered everything.  Instead of going to a scenic point for pictures, we had a walking tour of the city first.  Toledo is a quaint city on a hill, and it has lots of winding roads, which would make it easy to get lost (but in a place that beautiful, who cares if you get a little lost?!).  On the tour, we saw the cathedral, a museum with a famous painting by El Greco, and a Jewish synagogue that later became a Christian church and is now a museum.  We also saw something that was very funny for me: a little shop where cloistered nuns make and sell marzipan.  However, the exchange of money for marzipan occurs through a lazy-susan type arrangement so that people do not have contact with the nuns.  And the funniest part about this is that I have seen this place on the Travel Channel—Samantha Brown’s Passport to Europe show, I believe!  So I liked that a lot.  :)  We also saw lots of shops selling Lladró porcelain figurines, including an ornate boat with several figures on it that our guide said is available for 120,000 Euros!

After the tour, we got lunch at a little restaurant; we had tapas (some pollo, tortilla de patatas, y croquetas) and sangria.  Then we wandered the streets, looked in shops, and took lots of pictures.  We eventually made it back to the main plaza and bought some marzipan (because we had to try it).  I can’t say that I’m a big fan, but I didn’t totally hate it.  It was just a little too bland and sugary for me; I definitely prefer chocolate!  So we got some chocolate con churros to share, but even that wasn’t chocolatey enough for me.  I’m really craving some Ghirardelli brownies with chocolate chips in them… yum!

Anyway, Toledo is absolutely beautiful, and, like Segovia, much more peaceful than Madrid.  I definitely recommend visiting both places if you are coming to Spain!

Okay, time to check if I have any homework for tomorrow!

Hasta mañana!
