Hello and welcome to this edition of “here’s what’s happening in the life of Elizabeth!”
So today was the first day of classes! My first of the day was Spanish (Advanced Written Communication). It might be the first difficult Spanish class for me, which is probably good. I really hope to become fluent here, but it can be very intimidating to speak, and I hate being wrong. I’ll keep you updated on my progress… After Spanish, I tried the cafeteria food for the first time, and I have to say, it was significantly better than Brandeis. :) And not too expensive either! Definitely going there often. At 2:30, my Latin Rhythms and Dance class met and we walked 15 minutes off campus to a dance studio where the class will be. I was caught off guard by the fact that we were leaving campus, and I’m not entirely sure I can find my way back to that studio. It was a fun class, but there are significantly more girls than guys (I know, what did you expect?!). I’m debating whether or not to stay in the class, but I’ll give it another try on Monday. Directly after dance, I had my first philosophy class ever. We didn’t do anything important, but I think I will gain a good foundation of philosophical thought in that class.
Another highlight of the day was meeting my roommate! Abbi (not sure if that’s how you spell it…) is from Saudi Arabia and has been living with Maria since August. She is studying English as a second language and also learning Spanish. As far as I can tell, she’s doing very well with both. It’s nice to have someone in the house who speaks a little English and Spanish—makes a good balance for me.
That’s basically it for today. Enjoy the rest of Wednesday, everybody!
Hasta luego,
Elizabeth
Random thoughts: Same deal when I went to Spain to study--Like 60 girls and 5 guys. I have no clue why that would be. Glad the room mate came and glad you will try to stick it out in Dance class. Check your email account for the contact info for the woman I lived with in Toledo. She moved just outside the city a couple of years ago, but Maria has her husband's work number. I am so glad you are going to travel a bit. En el Prado, let us know what you liked and did not like. I liked Velasques the most, and disliked Goya mostly because of his dark years the most. I am glad you are keeping up on the blog. It is nice to feel connected to what you are going through. Michael has his first meet of the season this weekend at UIC. Annie's ankle continues to improve, and Chris is bowling well. They have finals next week, so they are in crunch mode. Love you. Keep up the communication. Feel free to include one every now in then in Spanish... Tio Miguel
